The 40th World Chess Olympiad took place from August 27 to September 10 in Istanbul, Turkey. Matches took place according to the Swiss system in 11 rounds, and the winner was determined by the greatest number of points collected by a team. There were four main players and one reserve player in both the men’s and women’s teams.
Time control in the Olympiad matches was 90 minutes of 40 turns plus 30 minutes until the end of the game with an addition of 30 seconds per turn beginning with the first. The "Zero Tolerance" rule was in effect.
Men’s teams from 154 countries and women’s teams from 126 countries, as well as men’s and women’s teams of the International Braille Chess Association, the International Committee of Silent Chess, and the International Physically Disabled Chess Association participated in the Olympics.
